New stats show we care more about the environment than ever before.
UKWSL are supporting Recycle Week, the theme is to thank everybody for continuing to recycle despite all that has happened this year. Despite everything, there’s still one small but powerful act every one of us can perform, every day, no matter who we are, where we’re from or what we do, we can enact positive change on the world around us.
The coronavirus pandemic has brought a new-found respect for the planet. People are recycling more than ever, with some councils recording a 34% increase in household recycling. Statistics released by Recycle Now show that through lockdown the UK has become even more environmentally aware, with nearly 9 in 10 households saying they ‘regularly recycle’. Coming out of lockdown, more people are prepared to change their lifestyles to help the environment, an amazing 93% of UK households say they believe that ‘everyone has a responsibility to help towards cleaning up the environment’.
UKWSL’s customers segregate and recycle 46% of all of the waste our service partners collect. Where waste can’t be recycled we ensure that 53% is sent for recovery giving it a second life within the circular economy. Just 1% of the waste produced is sent to landfill.
We want to thank our customers. For pulling together, while staying apart, for showing the power small actions can have when all of us get involved. We want to thank our service partners. For carrying on while everything else slowed down. Let’s give a medal of honour to every bleary-eyed key worker who still puts their bottles, boxes and cans in the right bin, even after a double shift.
This Recycle Week, whether you’re in the city or the suburbs, deep in the country or down by the sea, a life-saving, country-maintaining key-working hero, or a home-schooling, working from home star, a big business, or local legend, we want to thank you for continuing to recycle. No matter what life throws in the way, together we protect our nation and our planet for the future.
Whilst our environmental credentials are impressive, that doesn’t mean we’re going to rest on our laurels. There’s so much more to be done to enact positive change. Our goal over the next three years is to help our customers recycle more than ever before. We want to increase recycling to 60% and recovery to 39.5% with less than 0.5% of waste being sent to landfill.
