UKWSL have been named winner of Best Small to Medium-sized Business category at the 2020 Best Business Awards.
We were recognised for our innovative and engaging approach to sustainable waste management. The BBAs pride themselves on having a large panel of independent expert judges who select winners according to strict criteria for each category and sector.
The chairman of the judges said: “Congratulations to UKWSL for making a tremendous contribution to improving waste management particularly in the area of landfill diversion. It has saved 99% of its clients’ trash from landfill sites, which has helped them reach their target of zero waste going to landfill sites. This is a fantastic achievement that has resulted in UKWSL being identified as one of London Stock Exchange Group’s 1,000 companies to Inspire Britain and one of the fastest-growing SMEs. With waste management a major issue, it’s great to see positive action being taken.”

We’re so proud to have independent validation of our credentials and we look forward to helping more and more UK businesses to increase their recycling rates and eliminate waste to landfill.”

The challenges of a tough economic market haven’t slowed us from achieving the goals we have set ourselves. We continue to invest more than £1M in our online portal “The Hub”. Our eco-system is built on the fundamental principle of providing honest, accurate, real-time data, giving customers complete visibility to service performance levels.

For too many years, our industry has talked about landfill diversion and recycling. UKWSL believes that on the whole, our industry has failed to act in a timely manner resulting in large amounts of waste still being sent to landfill. So, we’ve taken action on behalf of our customers to invert the waste hierarchy. Our stringent service partner selection criteria means that we actively promote and look to work with businesses who are able to offer landfill diversion. By working with more than 400 service partners we’ve been able to divert just under 99% of waste from landfill for our customers.
Having an understanding of waste and associated environmental impacts isn’t just something for our customers. We believe that raising awareness and educating staff about the challenges customers face is fundamental to driving cultural change. We’re committed to training staff so that they can see the big picture meaning we have more opportunity to add value to our customer experience. We are an accredited training centre for the Chartered Institute of Waste Management’s industry leading training course. WasteSmart certification provides a concise introduction to waste and resource management.
Our goal is for all of our staff to be certified to a foundation level by the end of their first year of employment with us. We have achieved this for 98% of our office based staff.
Our Connecting Communities program aims to ensure that as a business we are involved in our local community through more than just employment.
