Hazardous Waste Regulations

Since July 2005 there have been new regulations relating to hazardous waste in the United Kingdom.

More than two hundred wastes have now been classified as hazardous. Most common items that are now termed as hazardous are fluorescent light tubes, white goods such as fridges & freezers, TV’s & computer monitors.

Remember these Key Changes:

  1. Are you an exempt site? If you are a site that produces hazardous waste you are required by law to be registered with the Environment Agency.
  2. Waste such as TV’s & computer monitors, fridges & freezers, fluorescent tubes and batteries now come under this classification.
  3. No longer pre–notification of hazardous wastes.
  4. Mixing of hazardous waste is no longer permitted. Mixing hazardous wastes with general wastes will deem the whole load hazardous.

The producer (you) must keep a record of any hazardous waste produced.
